Visiting Research Dietitian Position at NSRL Announced(January 2012)
The National Soybean Research Laboratory seeks a 75% time, 12-month visiting academic professional staff member to provide dietetic research, training, and administrative support for programs undertaken by or supported by the National Soybean Research Laboratory and the World Initiative for Soy in Human Health (WISHH) program.

Nutritious Noodles in Cambodia(June 2011)
Smart Noodle posterNSRL is providing technical assistance to create 1,000,000 packages of specially formulated soy-fortified noodles in Cambodia. This collaboration between NSRL, International Relief and Development (IRD) and Men Sarun Instant Noodle Factory will integrate 10% soy flour into the standard Men Sarun noodle recipe and called Mee Bompon Sokpeap, meaning “nutritious noodles.”

The noodles will be distributed in Cambodia and sold to institutional buyers in the humanitarian sector for distribution noodle customersto their target beneficiaries. There currently exists the potential for a niche market in the humanitarian sector for protein-enriched and fortified foods, and this project will test the feasibility and acceptability of the enhanced instant noodles. The noodles will also be sampled in local markets to test the acceptability and promote the product to other potential customers.

In this program, Nick Scates, project coordinator for the National Soybean Research Laboratory will discuss soymilk’s fast-emerging status as a highly delicious and nutritious consumer beverage. Currently,

• 25% of consumers drink soymilk regularly, and
• 84% of consumers rate soy products as healthy.

In particular, Scates will talk about trends in consumer acceptance of soymilk and address the ingredients, equipment and innovative applications for soymilk and co-products. He will also share current and future international soymilk projects, programs and microenterprise development efforts.

Soybean Yield Challenge 2011: and the winners are.....(December 2011)

The results are in for the Illinois Soybean Association Yield Challenge contest, and are available through their website, www.ilsoy.org, but we've linked directly to the announcement HERE.Overall, the participants saw an average 6.45% increase in yield, which was a 1.25% increase over 2010's results. Congratulations to the winners!

2011 Yield Challenge Update(September 2011)

With soybean harvest well under way in many parts of the state, results of management practices applied throughout the year are finally being revealed.
Over 300 participants from 52 teams will report the yields of both standard practice plots and high yield practice plots in the coming weeks.  Results will be analyzed and posted online at www.soyyieldchallenge.com at the end of the year.  Watch for announcements later this fall!

Webinar: Spotlighting Soybeans in Food: Challenges and Opportunities(February 2012)

The soybean is often touted as the miracle bean, as an agricultural crop and as a food source. But did you know that you can use soy in baking, for egg or milk replacement and as a meat analog? In this program, Dr. Karl Weingartner, Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Director of the International Soybean Program (INTSOY) for the National Soybean Research Laboratory (NSRL) will discuss soybeans status as an extremely versatile food and highly nutritious source of protein. He will discuss how the protein in soybeans compares to peanuts, beans, fish and meat.

Healthy Soy Food Options Coming to the School Lunch Line(January 2012)

The USDA has recently added more fruits, vegetables and whole grains to the
school menu for millions of school age children in the U.S. The rulings will also
allow schools to serve tofu, along with other soyfoods and soymilk. Tofu can
be included alongside already served veggie burgers, chicken-less slices on sandwiches, edamame and soynuts in salads, sloppy joes with soy crumble and soymilk. More details about the changes is available from The Soyfoods Association of North America News Release and these USDA links:

Learn About Various Soy Foods and Ingredients(September 2011)

The September issue of Today's Dietitian includes a great article on the various soy foods and soy ingredients available in many local and on-line stores. They also provide great nutrition reasons to add some soy to your menus. Of course they provide a few recipes using soy for you to try, Be sure to also check out our Soy Foods Glossary for additional food and ingredient options, and as days get shorter and weather turns cooler, we highly recommend our Game Day Chili recipe. NSRL has released a new YouTube Video Fighting Hunger with Soy: Central America highlighting how soy used in Central America is making a difference, with protein solutions in early childhood nutrition and school feeding programs, and microenterprise development.

2011 International Soybean Processing and Utilization Conference (ISPUC) (November 2011)

The sixth annual Soy & Grain Trade Summit and the scientific gathering International Soybean Processing and Utilization Conference (ISPUC) were held in St. Louis, MO on October 31 - November 3, 2011.Attendees from industry and academia had the opportunity to understand their scientific work with soy in the context of the global agriculture, food and animal nutrition marketplace. Speakers presented basic and applied research on topics randing from processing, health and human nutrition, new quality traites and unique soy foods, animal nutrition, and lesser-known, new and novel applications for soy.

NSRL was pleased to be host the ISPUC portion of the conference.The proceedings are available for attendees using the access password available in the Soy and Grain Trade Summit program book at Soy & Grain Trade Summit website.

International Soybean Processing and Utilization Conference (ISPUC), St. Louis MO Oct. 31-Nov. 3, 2011(May 2011)
The sixth annual Soy & Grain Trade Summit (formerly Soya & Oilseed Summit/Global Soybean & Grain Transport) and leading scientific gathering International Soybean Processing and Utilization Conference (ISPUC) will be co-located in St. Louis, Missouri on October 31 - November 3, 2011. "Partnering with Soyatech's Soy & Grain Trade Summit allows attendees from industry and academia the opportunity to understand their scientific work in the context of the global agriculture, food and animal nutrition marketplace," added ISPUC conference chair Karl Weingartner, "This exciting, combined event promises to benefit researchers and industry participants alike."
